Maison Ferrand proprietor and Plantation Rum master blender Alexandre Gabriel is proud to introduce Plantation Xaymaca Special Dry, his latest addition to the Plantation Rum portfolio and the realization of a dream. With Xaymaca Special Dry, Plantation revives the quintessential Jamaican-style, 100% pot still rums of the 19th century with an expression of intense flavors that reveal the traditional, legendary Jamaican “rum funk.”
Plantation Xaymaca Special Dry is bottled at 43% alcohol by volume (86 proof) and has a suggested retail price of $24.99. It is available in the U.S. as of September 2018.
Jamaica’s authentic pot still rum is famous for its aromas and flavors of black banana and flambéed pineapple, locally called "rum funk" or "hogo," an Anglicization of the French term "haut goût" (high taste).
"With Xaymaca Special Dry, I wanted to dive into the iconic culture that is unique to Jamaican rum,” explains Alexandre Gabriel. “I wanted to work with these complex flavors of overripe exotic fruits with an almost ‘animal intensity.’ We can still find certain white rums with this famous “rum funk.” I think, however, that this great terroir expresses itself perfectly in an aged rum. That is why we are launching Xaymaca Special Dry, which is attribute to this ancestral culture of rum."
The name ‘Xaymaca’ evokes the name given to the island by its first inhabitants, the Arawaks. This nectar is a return to the origins of Jamaican rum, in all its complexity and intensity. With its latest investment in the Caribbean (the purchase of the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados in 2017), Maison Ferrand now owns a third of the mythical Long Pond and Clarendon Jamaican distilleries. Thanks to these exceptional distilleries, Alexandre Gabriel made his dream of blending a 100% pot still Jamaican rum a reality.
Gabriel remarks, "The access to these two emblematic distilleries, with their retort stills that look like ancient pachyderms, is the realization of a dream. It allowed me to dive into this ancestral tradition and create a rum that I had wanted for a long time."
Xaymaca Special Dry is a blend of rums distilled in the old John Dore pot still at Long Pond and the Vendome pot still at Clarendon. The idea is to boldly assert the powerful and expressive character of these rums.
THE CULTURE OF MARKS
In Jamaica, the production of rum is part of its national heritage. The powerful character and concentrated aromatics of its rums make the island one of the most desirable terroirs on the planet. Every distillery produces a variety of styles of rum (the famous "rum marks"), from the lightest to the most intense, which are indicated by initials whose meaning is sometimes lost to history. Xaymaca Special Dry pays homage to this Jamaican tradition with a delicious blend of five marks: Clarendon EMB and MLC and Long Pond VRW and STCE, distinguished by notes of very ripe tropical fruits.
These expressions are amplified by the Plantation method of double ageing, combining a first maturation in Jamaica in bourbon casks with further refining in the South West of France, in Ferrand casks. Xaymaca’s Special Dry title refers to the taste profile of this intense and rustic rum. In the pure Jamaican tradition, this rum has no added sugar.
