This is one of five cocktails that won the 2009 Damrak gin competition in San Francisco.
Golden Gate Gimlet by John Solorzano of Jack Falstaff
2 oz. Damrak
1.5 oz. Fresh lime juice
Fresh Cucumber (2" slice Skin on)
Fresh orange rind
0.5 oz. Agave nectar
0.5 oz. Cointreau
0.5 oz Blood Orange Puree
5 dashes of Orange bitters
Two turns of Fresh ground pepper
pinch of Piment d"Esplette *
pinch of sea salt
Garnish:
Thin slice of cucumber (Skin on)
Salt/Pepper/d'Esplette rim
In a shaker, muddle cucumber, generous amount of orange rind, bitters and dry spices
Add remaining wet ingredients
Add ice
Shake well
Strain into chilled cocktail glass
*Piment d'Esplette is a dried red chile from the Pyrenees region of Spain. It is moderately spicy, with hints of smoke, and is classic to Basque cuisine
